The ELVs (experimental law variations) are experimental no more!

Effective from August 1st, the 13 new laws make fundamental changes to the lineout, maul and scrum, and introduce crucial differences to the role of match officials.

In his new report, Surviving the ELVs, Dan Cottrell outlines the key technical and tactical areas you need to consider.

Download the report FREE OF CHARGE by clicking here!

The report contains descriptions of how players need to adjust technically, and how teams must adapt their tactics to accommodate the changes. Every important area is covered, including:

  • How you can still attack despite defenders collapsing your maul.
  • The role of the "keystone" player.
  • Ways to adapt your kicking game, now you can't pass-and-kick from your own 22.
  • Tactical considerations for the quick throw in.
  • How the back three need to improve technically.
  • Attacking and defending at lineouts with unequal numbers.
  • The role of your hooker at defensive lineouts.
  • Exploiting the "7 metre gap" at scrums – and defending the "inside space".
  • The additional importance of set plays and back row moves.
  • The changing defensive role of the scrum half.

The answers to these and many other vital questions are all in Surviving the ELVs.

It truly is a vital guide for every coach, player and official, and any fan who cares to know the laws… and it’s free from Better Rugby Coaching.

I have been sent a DVD for the Aug 1 deadline of the ELV´s and I must say that as I coach a team of 18 to 25yr olds in a development country, its great. For the established and ongoing outfits I am sure that coaching these new laws will be a challenge but not for too long as the changes are only slight and mostly very positive. The one that bothers me a little, as does most, is the collapsing the maul, I just believe its dangerous although it is now to be done by pulling down from hip to shoulder level. Just the possible weight ratio falling on the bottom player if he is in a bad position can still be catastrophic.

However if I had to vote yay or nay on the overall ELV´s I would vote Yay!

Now, we just need help getting these developing countries into believing this sport is something that is both fun and challenging..and a sport to switch to instead of the many others that are vying for position...
We all have very different challenges! Mine is to entice enough players so I can put a team together...

If there any coaching courses in Northern Europe - I would be happy to attend :-)

Like any good Jackal scrounging at the Rucks!
