The ELVs (experimental law variations) are experimental no more now. Ten have now been ratified by the IRB.

They are in official use from May 23rd, 2009, to apply to all competitions and leagues commencing after this date.

The ELVs regarding lineout numbers and mauling were not ratified. The Laws concerning these areas of the game have reverted to what they were prior to the introduction of the ELVs in August 2008.

I have been sent a DVD for the Aug 1 deadline [in 2008] of the ELV´s and I must say that as I coach a team of 18 to 25yr olds in a development country, its great. For the established and ongoing outfits I am sure that coaching these new laws will be a challenge but not for too long as the changes are only slight and mostly very positive. The one that bothers me a little, as does most, is the collapsing the maul, I just believe its dangerous although it is now to be done by pulling down from hip to shoulder level. Just the possible weight ratio falling on the bottom player if he is in a bad position can still be catastrophic.

However if I had to vote yay or nay on the overall ELV´s I would vote Yay!

Now, we just need help getting these developing countries into believing this sport is something that is both fun and challenging..and a sport to switch to instead of the many others that are vying for position...
We all have very different challenges! Mine is to entice enough players so I can put a team together...

If there any coaching courses in Northern Europe - I would be happy to attend :-)

Like any good Jackal scrounging at the Rucks!

Please can you either provide some guidance or even look at providing an extension to the Guide to indicate how each age groups in mini/junior rugby (as per the RFU continuum) is impacted by the ELV's.

Many thanks, Dave
