I help coach the U8's and we will be moving on to the U9's game next year.  Does anybody have any good resources explaining the changes from tag to contact (laws, numbers, positions etc.) and what the most effective areas to concentrate on are, bearing in mind that when we return in September we will have about three two-hour sessions before taking the team into their first games.

Thanks

Thanks Jonesy,

I found a link to all of the document here. Do you know if this varies at all to the English game at U9?

There are quite a few differences between the Welsh and English interpretation of the development of Junior Rugby. For the English game you need to download the 2007-8 Continuum from the RFU website . This covers all of the differences by age group through mini to age grade rugby.

Simply tho' U9 in England are 9 in a team (3 forwards) uncontested scrums and lineouts and no kicking. This progresses to contested lineouts and scrums at U10 still with 9 players. At U11 you move to 12 players with contested 5 man scrums and linouts, tactical kicking and conversions in front of the posts.

The continuum gives you a full set of guidelines and how the laws vary for mini/junior rugby.

The continuum is amended every season so the appropriate release for next season will probably not be available until Sep/Oct.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, I tried to edit and couldn't.

I think the maximum pitch sizes are 60 x 35 although you rarely see these because of lack of space.

If I remember when we moved to U9 we introduced contact early in the new year, so about 9 months early, building up from tackling from a kneeling position through walking on knees, standing, walking then finally running. Gradually building up their confidence and technical ability. There's a lot of new stuff to cover with the intricacies of offside, rucking technique, mauling, front row play etc

There's a wealth of info out on the web, google is your friend!!

May be worth doing some evening sessions late summer covering basic technique so you can at least start the season with the fundementals already covered for most.

FTR, and for those in ENGLAND (or at least under the remit of the RFU and Marsh), the RFU has very recently emailed out to CCC's explainng that tackling 9and other contacxt as a result) can NOT be coached UNTIL the U9 season.  In the past tacklking could be introduced in training only after feb 1st in the U8 but this has now been removed.  I reiterate - no tackling practise in U8 season at all, ever.

cheers

Steve,

Thanks for that, there certainly is a lot of info but I now have a printout of the relevant part of the continuum. It is too easy to concentrate on the tackling aspect and ignore the other aspects of the U9s game.

Didds,

Sorry, but I don't think that message has filtered down very far...

following the email this week from gary Townsend, the only way that this message can now NOT have filtered through (English clubs only of course) is if clubs

* have not appointed a CCC, at least nominally, or have done so but

* have not provided the CCC's (updated?) contact details to the RFU as requested, or have done so but

* the CCCs (or nominated contact) has not bothered to pass on the info within their club.

Its that simple really.  I'm not an apologist for the RFU by any means, but clubs have to meet the RFU somewhere along the road :-)
