As I have a bit of time on my hands due to the weather I have been putting some plans in place for next season.

As background, this will be the last year I coach our youth at my club. My eldest will be moving into the seniors and it's fair to say I have had enough of the nanny state approach of certain people who manage aspects of that part of our game / club.

I've been coaching our seniors for the last season and a bit as part of a coaching team and this year there will be some big changes. Hopefully both our senior sides will secure promotion, early days I know but they are both very well placed to achieve this. It was the goal at the straight of the season. Also and sadly both team captains will be stepping back this year which will means that as a coaching team, management, selection and organising the players will all come to us.

Anyway the fun bit is that we have started planning our pre-season now. I'm aiming to bring some cross-sports skills into the mix and have secured the help of a judo coach and a greko(?) wrestling coach to bring a bit of change to the old "fitness" stuff. I've also assembled a mass of "equipment", ropes, tyres (car & tractor) and many other things. By planning sessions with the other coaches we have a plan to take us into next season.

Have to say this is the first time I have fully planned like this for what should be 60+ players, 2 evenings a week. Am looking forward to this once this season is out of the way.

This sounds great Spike... an exciting time!

I would very much like to know how things get on and hope you will keep us all informed once the sessions begin.

I'd also consider the pre-pre-season PERSONAL fitness plan for these players. They have typically 12-ish weeks between season end and pre-season trining started.

If you can ensure they arrive with decent CV (aerobic) fitness then you're a long way forward and can use valuable training time TRAINING not getting fit! You also send a message that the players should be taking responsibility for their OWN fitness.

Amateur triathletes train 6 days a week - ironman trainers do upwards of 20 hours a week. Runners maybe 4-5 times a week. Twice a week for an amateur rugby player plus one game still leaves two days a week they can be keeping themselves fit.

Spike, sounds like you have some ambitious plans for your team. Are they, the players, as ambitious?

Gotta get their buy-in. Otherwise it's frustration city for you.

Been there, done that.

The players set the goals for the teams at the start of this season and regular discussions with them and us as a coaching team have formed this approach and plan.
They are really keen to use this sort of thing.
I agree that their buy-in is critical (but that is the same for all training).
