Is this technique really legal?

Don't you have to follow the player to the ground?

If you are to stand the best chance of getting the guy out of the way then they should actually land on top of you at teh end of the roll

Legal? hmm as always an abstract concept but it is being used to great effect at the professional level

Grab and twist is a new technique, adapted from wrestling, to drive out opponents sealed over your ball after the tackle. We featured it in Rugby Coach in November 2007.

The author of the article is Mark Calverley, a highly qualified coach based in New Zealand. He also has produced a short film demonstrating the technique in action. You can download it from here, to open in your own movie player.

I've looked at this clip, and am well aware of the wide practice of it......

However Law 16  .definition, where one (or more) players from each team, who are on their feet, engage in contact, close around the ball on the ground .....

In this technique the player throwing the player to the ground is surely guilty of infringing law 16 [c] ...intentionally collapsing the ruck ??

comments anyone?

CRFC,WSMRFC,LRFC,MARFC,ARFC,MRFC,MUFFSRFC.......Tbc?

I LOVE the grab and twist. As a team that is a bit undersized compared to other U19 teams, it's a great equalizer in rucks.

I'm guessing there isn't a reason why this cant be used offensively (ie on Oppo ball) to pressureise the defense and possibly gain turnover ball...So, my left arm goes under his armpit and I grab his shirt, then I reach across with my other arm-it seems I grip nearer the shorts??. Then..I just twist? What's happening with my lower body and core?? Can we have it broken down for those of us hard of thinking?

The simplest is the roll clean out. Grip as described above, outside arm in between neck and arm, lock on and roll.

Take a look at this "George Smith Ruck Drill" where 3 types of clean out are practiced.

Another one worth a look for when the poacher/jackler has his/her head down low, preventing the clearer from getting under him/her and driving them off is the hip window clean out - just beware entering from the side!

There is a nice progression to this drill, again from Paul O'Connell and PowerAid where the tackler gets up to act as a blocker, protecting the poacher from the hip window clearout.
