Grab and twist is a new technique, adapted from wrestling, to drive out opponents sealed over your ball after the tackle. We featured it in Rugby Coach in November 2007.

The author of the article is Mark Calverley, a highly qualified coach based in New Zealand. He also has produced a short film demonstrating the technique in action. You can download it from here, to open in your own movie player.

I think that it is easier if you step back with your left leg and let him slide away on your left. It will take him longer to get into the game again and you need only a minimum of stength.

this move, and the similar peeling move, made all that fuss about sealing and bridging almost irrelevant.
its good to have a video but i dont think it is new.

I learned something similar in Australia called, fittingly, 'the crocodile.'  It involved binding onto the shoulders of someone bridging/sealing and rolling the both you and the other guy sideways like a crocodile's death roll.

Not sure about the legality/safety of it, though?

that is the peeling' move i meant. it works if its done early.
we have never been pinged for it and will do it till we are stopped
i like the move. if used well, it causes confusion in the team forming up in attack, with what they assume is secured ball.

i learned it in bed from watching the air new zealand cup...

At a recent course I was on there was a guy from the states who was a college wrestler before taking up rugby and was relatively new to the game

As soon as rucking started he was in his element and talking with him after he said he couldn't believe how many of the principles of wrestling he had been able to apply in the ruck to move people around while using leverage and their own weight against them

These are the people we should be talking to

Couldn't agree more - just let's keep the nasties out - the grapple tackles, chicken wings etc! RU is lovely and innocent in this regard, let's keep it that way.
