Dear All - having been a Back for my entire rugby career, scrummaging has always been a bit of a mystery.

Now of course, I am charged with coaching our U12's proper technique ... because theirs is pretty crap IMHO!

Any suggested reading?  Already have "Secrets of the Front Row" (thanks Dan), but nothing about including 2nd Rows & #8

Thanks in advance

firstly, de-mystify the whole thing. if your players can prop, then they should be able to safely scrummage in any position.

2nd rows bind as two props and as if the other prop is a hooker. in england at u12 its a round the hip bind so not hugely removed from a props bind (just more round shouldered). number 8 just binds round the hips before him.

any more questions just ask, BUT if they don't have good scrummaging positions to start with you have a huge row to hoe!

where are you based?

Wookie,

PM me some contact details..... I'll pass some details of the Front Row Mentoring scheme which we run out of Hampshire.....

If you are relatively local we can arrange for our Front row mentors to visit......

I would highly recommend the front row mentoring if you can get access to it.

The concentrated good practice will set players up for life.

Front row is the best position on the pitch in my opinion. One to one combat at scrums and lineouts, involved in every breakdown (either at the ruck, or on the fringes), and likely to be one of the most involved in making tackles. The mentoring process helps bring these benefits out.

Dan,

thanks for the vote of confidence in the scheme, when it was first implemented in Hampshire 4 or so seasons ago people weren't sure about the concept, but it has been proved a great success and as such we have expanded out into the surrounding counties....
