I've coached youth rugby for the past few years and noticed that nutrition is not something that players i've been involved with take very seriously. Equally good hydration pre and post match although encouraged is the same. There is loads of advice out there but does anyone have a good, simple fact sheet giving good basic advice on nutrition especially that they could share. ??

Thanks

The thing you must always consider when advising youth players upon diet is that its not only the players you have to sell it to.

I would suspect that the vast majority of youth players have the vast majority of their meals prepared for them by a parent/equivalent.  It isn't necessarily them that is choosing what to eat.  And of course within a family unit there may be other dietary requirements that take as big if not larger precedence, if not just disinterest.

So - its all well and good telling players they need low GI, high carb breakfasts and high carb post match meals - if mum or dad says "tough - its white toast and cheap jam for breakfast and sausages and chips for tea".
