I am coaching a U-16 team in Ontario and we are having a great season. I have a number of very altheltic forwards that love to run with the ball.

The problem is they break a tackle make a couple of lateral cuts like an American football player and sure enough run into a large number of the other team, while the balance of my team is trying to catch up (and late) to the break down. This typically results in a turned over ball.

I have encouraged the players to take the intial contact and form the ruck or maul over and over again, but it whenever we are in the game the excitment takes over and we fall back into bad habits.

When we do form second and third phase plays we are great, but the turn overs are turning my hair grey.

Any suggestions on how to reinforce the need not to run away from the support?

play conditioned training games in practise

e.g.

*create channels along the pitch; players can only advance within the channel they are in or its a PK to the oppo; the only way to change channel is to pass out of the current one

*start a team skills drill with a narrow(ish) channel which the attacking forwards have to work through and out before play can widen

*bib forwards and backs up differently (eg forwards red, backs blue) on an attacking side. play touch for a short time, attacking side always attacks, but restarts from centre at a turnover. Whenever a forward has the ball and is touched/tagged he must pass within 1 second to another forward - or turn over. This will (hopefullY) eventually teach the players that if they run away from their support there are repercussions (it also promotes close support running as a secondary item). You will meed LOTS of open questioning to aid this process to sink in - and if they don't get the answer (e.g. Why did you tiuen over? What ahppened that meant you couldm't pass within 1 second? etc) don;t give it to them, just start again.

there's some starters anyway...

cheers

Here are some more ideas to add to Didds' excellent suggestions:

1. Play no ball touch. The "ball carrier" has to pass to a player by calling their name. Otherwise play normal touch rules. Turnover in possession! The players soon have to look up and see where their support is. Add a rule that there can be no miss passes.

2. Turnovers come from poor ball retention. Get the ball carriers to practise fighting to stay on their feet and driving forward until the support arrives.

3. Play games of 3 second touch, where the ball carrier has 3 seconds to release the ball if he is touched or the ball is turned over.
