I'd be interested to find out what other coaches preferences are when purchasing New kit for their sides.

If we examine this for every level of the game,

  1. Senior Club
  2. Age Grade Sides (U18 etc)
  3. Secondary School sides (U13 - U16)
  4. Mini rugby (playing full contact - not tag or other non contact games)

I am primarily interested in the fabric for the shirts, do you have a preference re:  collars, sleeve length, etc..

What other kit do you consider as essential and desirable ?

Basically if you were asked to give a recommendation to your club what would you be advising, likewise what would you advise to players at each level if they were asking about their personal kit.  Assume that the committee know nothing about the game and the players have little to no experience of what they really need.

If you always do what you've always done

You'll always have what you've always had.

Personally, I prefer the sublimated polyester. Mostly because it launders really easily, dries quickly etc. The trad cotton ones take ages to dry. On the field they are as tough as boots and do not pick up Kgs of water during the game.

As regards collars I have no opinion - really an aesthetic thing. I am guessing that for most positions, the funcitonality of their jersey is not affected by collar design. Front rows may have a view. Sleeve lengths - really player preference. There is a theory that long sleeves help in catching highballs in wet weather, the fabric being more grippy than wet, muddy skin. Forwards seem to prefer short sleeves, presumably one less thing for opponents to grab. Not sure if there is any advantage to Raglan sleeves, seems will be in a different place. They do avoid a seam on top of the shoulder which may be a comfort issue for tight 5 forwards although some non-raglan sleeved jerseys are made from one piece of material with no shoulder seams.
