I have just read a blog site which had four or five really good quotes, only for me to read that they were made up.

So, do you have some wise words which can only be attributed to you? (I can search the web to check!)

To start you off I have put down a couple of first words:

"Coaching children to listen is like..."

"If winning doesn't matter, and development does then..."

And my first effort:

"A good goal kicker knows his limitations, a great goal kicker knows his mind"

Not one of mine but one that is appropriate to eny sport both team and individual -

"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is who you are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are" - John Wooden

In answer to "why do we keep score":

Development should be measured. Scoring is an excellent method.

Hull City FC remained in the English Football Premiership this weekend. They lost against Manchester United. They came one place about the relegation zone. Winning is everything at the club, but underpinning that is development.

There are plenty of "winning" quotes, and Vince Lombardi was famous for saying "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing" as well as the keep score quote.

However he also talked about love and trust, courage and honour, teamship and desire.

"Who enjoys holding the cup the most, the player who thinks he is the best player, or the player who worked hardest to improve"

1979,playing for British Army Germany against French Forces,( In effect,France C ).The year before there had been some naughties when the game, bizzarely, was played in Luxembourg. The tradition was to award new caps before the game. After the British Military Attache for France had done so,he grandly declared,'Gentlemen,i am instructed to inform you, that anyone indulging in foul play, will never wear the red shirt again,.

There was a period of silence, after which our Tight Head Prop said.'Must 'ave bin like this on Bastille Day'.

It did'nt make us feel any better and we were soundly beaten,( up ).

"You need to earn the right to move the ball wide". Don't remember who said it (some French philosopher I think !)

That'd be Descartes then!

I guess "moving it wide" is a phrase with a dimensional adjective akin to "having it large" but not perhaps "walking tall" or "behaving thick"?

My favourite quote is Jim Telfer's to the 1997 Lions forwards..."There are 2 kinds of rugby players - there's the honest ones and then the rest."
