| Hi all i've been getting Dan's Rugby news lwtters for a while and they are informative and a brilliant resource but this is the first time i've used the forums so be gentle. We've had a number of under 6/5's turning up either cause their older borthers/sisters are involved in the club or because , like me they have parents involved. After seeing the local football team get a soccer tots program up and running we decided to do something similar but have had to put it on hold due to insurance fears. The area seems a little grey and where having problems getting a clear picture. We have been told our RFU insurance does not cover under 5's is this true can't seem to dig it up at the minute.. If this is true can anybody recomend a good insurance company that can deal with this. Has anybody else got a tots under 5's program up and running that could give us some advice?? I've seen a program called rugby bugs but it looks like a franchise type affair which is not how we want to tackle this. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Its a minefield.
AIUI in England.... basically a club can provide a "pre U7" group BUT cannot pay matches at all (so no Club A "pre-U7" v Club B "pre-U7" fixtures). Training is supposed to focus on fun rather than necessaruly hard core rugby skills, but that is not to say that stuff like passing etc is "wrong" - ISTR something about gross motor skills being a focus.. ??. Also AIUI whoever is involved in running such a squad should include someone that has experience, maybe even qualifications in early years education as the focus is on bodies and minds rather than rugby. In theory I believe that such squads can train with U7s but the practicalities of that may be difficult in reality.
We looked at this area three years or so ago and ended up dropping the idea because of the practicalities of providing all this, plus the issue that potentially 5 year old Johnny's primary school teaching dad or mum may well be happy to run it, but what happens when Johnny attains his 6th birthday and moves to the U7 squad "full time" and said parent goes with them and doesn't want to be involved in the pre-U7 squad any longer and said squad has now lost its early years experienced "coach". ?
This is a situation that i suspect was somewhat "forced" upon the RFU to make due to insurance cover reasons (ie to prevent under 6's being involved in U7 matches "accidentally" - this was clearly an issue for a long time ... and maybe still is in some places either deliberately or through ignorance). I have no evidence of this - its just a personal "rationalisation".
Best way forward is for you to contact the RFU directly, and maybe also Marsh the RFU's insurer's. They shoud be able to give chapter and verse. What I wrore above is based on at least 3 year old understanding that the intervening time may have well obfuscated. Marsh may well be able to pride additional insurances if needed.
Outside of England the rules and regs will I am sure be different.
cheers

... of course, again in England, once a child has attained his or her 6th birthday they can then play U7 tag. They do not have to wait for the next season.
