| Fly halves, or the pivot player have three basic options: run, kick, pass. Problems arise when the fly half, often one of the best players in the team, decides that he will only kick and run, with passing a last resort. Here are some solutions: 1. Start the fly half deeper. Players tend to kick or run under pressure from defenders in front of them. 2. Stand the inside centre closer. Making the pass easier. 3. Agree a tactical plan before the game. The fly half has to buy into this plan, so work with him to create the plan. 4. In your tactical plan, decide in what circumstances you want to kick the ball: for example poor set piece, inside your 22m, slow 3rd phase ball. 5. In training, put the fly half under heavy pressure so he gets used to passing away. He may not be convinced that he can pass well enough, or the outside backs can be trusted. 6. Use moves that the fly half continues to be part of, like loops and switches.
