I am putting together answers for the top 100 rugby coaching questions that MUST be answered. Have you got any burning questions, however simple, that you might want answered?

Here are some categories to consider:

  1. Footwork, handling, defence, contact, kicking
  2. Mind, body and soul
  3. Management of players, parents and other coaches
  4. Refereeing and the laws
  5. Set pieces
  6. Tactics
  7. Unit skills

For instance:

  • How can I make my props avoid contact?
  • What are the key points to winning a fast ruck?
  • Who do I need to talk to about health and safety?
  • What do I say to player who I need to drop?
  • How can we win more lineout ball at the front?
  • In what ways can I improve my scrum half's passing?
  • How do you coach vision to see a gap or space?
  • How do you coach comminucation to exploit a gap?
  • How do you make players choose a back up plan if a move starts to go wrong?

How can we all (coaches and teammates) encourage the 'timid' player to be more aggressive?

How do we encourage more communication, period?

How do we teach a timid player to become more aggressive? It does depend on your definition of aggressive of course, but in my experience, it is a combination of teaching the best technique to try to ensure that bodily damage to the timid one is minimal, because most timidity is a result of fear of consequences - if I do something rough, something rough is going to re-visit me in spades. Teach technically perfect tackling (for example), then wait. One day, when the player is ready - not when you are ready - the tackle will come, and a beatific smile will spread across the young player's face. Aggression in sport comes from within, not when someone else tries to impose it.

Communication? Ahhh, the great mystery. If anyone masters this one, it'll be Nobel Prize worthy won't it!

Cheers, Steve.  I guess sound technique breeds confidence, leading to a will to get stuck in a bit more.  Good tip!
