| We have a player who is 17 and is very good. Is he eligible to play adult rugby or is their a legal requirement that players be 18? I have tried to find information about this on the internet but cannot find any. Many thanks for any help

which country?
In England, players may play adult/senior rugby once they have reached their 17th birthday. The exception is that to play in the front row they must be 18 years old.
Technically they are still a child at age 17, so all due child protection issues must be adhered to e.g. no sexually orientated discussions in their hearing, no swearing, no particpation in alcohol etc. (yeah, yeah,... I know !!!)

In professional rugby in the SH 18 is the 'magic' number- while we tend to work on the 'if they're good enough, they're old enough' principle, we have gotten better at the off field issues (pressure, social development, education & life skills, physical development and recovery etc. The better we can nurture them, the longer they last- check Dan Carter vs Jonny Wilkinson in terms of the way they were managed & how they've gone in their careers...
