hi all,

in the low level league my team are currently playing we have had three teams enter into the league.  up until now most teams at our level are similar-ish with some having a few more fatties than others, some preferring to play it in the backs a little more, but all generally the same level.  these three new teams are well above our level, and will almost certainly be top of the league. one of them just recorded over 100 points last weekend against an average team in our league.  they are all "old boys" teams and have lightish packs, and fast back rows and like to throw the ball around a lot.

my team have a pretty unfit pack, though it is pretty good at the set-piece.  our back line is good, but tends to get a bit over-run with numbers by teams with good backs and nippy back rows to add numbers, as our pack cannot match the "old boys" packs in terms of speed or fitness in open play.

are there any particularly useful strategies to help prevent a cricket score from such teams?  i was thinking of:

1) keeping it in the pack as much as possible

2) using a blitz defence to pressure the opposition from set piece

3) telling the forwards to corner flag as if their lives depnded on it to help sweep up when they inevitably break through

are these along the right lines?  any other ideas?

spme very basic concepts here and possibly not that practical (and you are probably on the right lines).

* they can only spoin it wide etc if THEY have the ball. If you can keep the ball then what ever they can do is redundant. So - minimise the opportunites for them to get the ball

- play to your strengths ... maybe forwards picking and riving, mauling, keeping it tight etc. Back row moves from scrums etc.
- don;t "give" them the ball... don;t kick the ball to them, don;t kick it off the park and give them a l/o (unless you are confident that you can win a large % of their throw). Do NOT make silly errors - knock ons, forcing play etc.

Such an approach is unlikely to mean many try scoring iopportunities for your self (unless you can roll a maul 60m.. ;-) so ensure you have a dead ball kicker that can pepper their 22m from your PKs or kick goals from everywhere.

They will of course have the ball at some time - no matter what you manage to do. So thejn you need to nullify their threats

- scrummage hard/wheel etc to disrupt their scrum ball.
- work at spoiling whether in the air or on the ground their lineout ball... try to prevent off the top. ELVs DO favour the non-throwing tail gunner now... get a FAST player at the rear of your lineout to concentrate on the #10 or even block off the #9/10 channel.
- defensively maybe an up and in/banana defence to curtail their wide ball tactics. back three pendulum working hard, #9 sweeping outside the ball. hammer the tackles.

IME though it is difficult to keep this approach up for 8-0 minutes if your pack really is that lardy UNLESS they are valso far superior in strength and weight to wear out the oppo pack.

Get your pack working on their fitnes SERIOUSLY if they are themselves serious about it all.

Good luck
