| Any refs out there who can clarify for me the following scenario, my player running forward with ball, turns, remains static, support runner following up recieves the ball from a outstretched arm, referee blows for a forward pass?? this happened to my team yesterday, the point I'm trying to make is, if the ball did not leave the players hand, how can it be a forward pass, or am I missing the point??

| There does not seem to be anything wrong with what your players have done. I can only assume that the angle the ref was seeing the pass was from behind and that the pass was not blatantly backwards, maybe held out to the side slightly and therefore appearing to go forward. Thats the only conclusion i can come up with..........

| I agree with turbo - it depends, in which direction were the hands outstretched? If they are held out "forwards" ie towards the opposition try line (unlikely given you say the player has turned), then IMO it would be a forward pass even if the ball went hand to hand. But not if they are held sideways or backwards ... anyone agree? Ferret

| To be precise, the players arm was out sideways in line with oppositions tryline, then my guy runs onto the ball, continues his run, whistle blows?? forward pass?? Hmmmm.

| In that case no, but as turbo said, the ref must have seen it from a strange angle and thought it was forward. I often find I can spot a forward pass by the opposition from 50 metres away when the ref can't see it from five! Ferret

Yeah,
I always tell my players that if they are going to hand the ball off always make a concious effort to hve the arms angled back up the pitch slightly. It is a difficult call for refs since the passers arms will tend to move forwards with the receiving players motion as he takes the ball from the passer and then the ref must make his call by when he thinks the receiver had full posession of the ball.
