watching the Tri nations once again, obviously after playing under the ELV's for a season now, and us in UK a year behind.... as per usual.

I watched the lineouts carefully, neither teams hooker seem to stand 2m from the front of the lineout nor does their receiver stand 2m back, in fact the number nine took the position of the hooker but stood in front of the thrower (especially Weepu). Or the nines stood at the front (even received quick throws).

Therefore does this mean that you do not have to have a hooker at the front of the lineout nor do you have to have a receiver (no.9) 2m away from the lineout, you could place them all in the lineout and move after the ball is thrown in?

I watched the NZ v Aus game today too and was totally confused!  I attended a Referees & Coaches education day last week put on by the RFU where we went through the ELVs from the refereeing and coaching perspectives.  As far as I was aware the receiver (normally the 9 but can be anyone) has to be 2m from the lineout but sides do not need to have a receiver if they don't want to.  The defending side can also have a man in the 5m channel (normally the hooker but again does not have to be) but he too must be 2m from the lineout - clearly not in evidence today!  Are the tri-nations being played under a different set of ELVs?  The Super 14 was played under an alternative set of ELVs, some of which will not be applicable for the forthcoming season.  I am told (by an RFU official so he could be wrong!) that if you want to see the ELVs that we (northern hemisphere) will be using, watch the Currie Cup games - they are being played under the ELVs as directed by the IRB.

I would say to anyone ignore what you are watching on TV!

Under the ELV's which came into effect on the 1st Aug - at a line out if a team elects to have a reciever at a line out they must start 2mtrs away from the line until the ball has left the 'hookers' hands.

On the defence of the line out, the defending team must have someone who stands in the 5 mtr channel at least 2mtrs from the line (until the ball has left the throwers hands) - failure to have a player in the channel is a penatly.

Basically you can elect to have a reciever (nomiated 9), but must have someone in the 5mtr channel (nominated '2').

Sorry, appologies:
The defending team must have someone who stands in the 5 mtr channel at least 2mtrs from the line (until the ball has left the throwers hands) - failure to have a player in the channel is a FREE KICK!
