| Here is a guide I did for the Ospreys (Wales). At the moment I have not found out chapter and verse from other unions, but will reproduce anything I can in the meantime.

Thanks for that Dan- keep 'em coming! Seems a pity that there may be so many different versions of rugby with some NH Unions wanting to hand pick ELVs that they perceive will suit them... having coached rugby in N & SH in the last 5yrs, & recently trialled the FULL set of ELVs, I'm all for them... they require us coaches to pull our fingers out & COACH creatively, encourage athleticism in the players & despite all the protestations, STILL allow rugby to be a game for all shapes & sizes- the only difference is that all shapes need to be a tad fitter!

| The feedback from the grassroots coaches from South Africa has been very positive towards the ELVs. It only seems to be commentators in the NH who are misunderstanding what is happening (and which ones are coming in).

| Sorry Dan, forgive my ignorance - I was under the impression that ELV 3, pulling down the maul, was not being trialled by the RFU at U19 level? (Although I can't now remember where I saw that and it isn't in the RFU ELVs guide) YOur Ospreys guide - very useful - implies that it applies at all contact levels. Am I wrong about this? Tim

| You are right about u19 RFU and pulling down the maul. Have done watched a mauling session last night they collasped pretty well on their own without any effort to pull down! The Osprey document applies to age groups that are ticked.

| Hi Dan I attended an RFU ELV session last evening aimed at U19 and below where it was stated that at U9 and U10 only the defending side at the scrum must be 5m back. This is a bit ambiguous in the Continuum revisions posted on the RFU Forums but the answer last evening was clear, (based on U9/U10 S/H maybe struggling with a 5m pass...). As you say, the former 7m line becomes 5m though so the ELVs have effectively reduced the space that U9/U10 have to play in from scrums. Also on S/H positioning at the scrum it was made clear that existing Continuum regulations on where they must stand prevail and effectively nullify the ELV restrictions. Best The Rugby Doctor

| Hi Dan I attended an ELV open evening held by the Blues last night. At the very begining they said that the only law/regulation that is still to be confirmed is the pulling down of the maul for juniors. As it stands at the moment - It is not permitted. One other thing that came up re scrum/ offside lines. The scrumhalf not putting the ball in has only two options: 1- follow the ball but must remain within 1 metre of the scrum (this can only be done from the side of the scrum that the ball was put in from) or option 2 retire the 5 metres, if however his hooker wins the ball against the head the scrum half is not allowed to return to the hindmost foot. I did point out that in junior rugby this would cause a bit of a problem in so much as no member of the scrum is permitted to pick up the ball from within the scrum. I am awaiting a response and will let you know. I thought your ELV Matrix was very good by the way

| Hi Turbo The RFU U19 variations allow no. 8 to detach from the scrum, provided he is the last man in a 3-4-1 scrum, and immediately picks up the ball. So that would be the thing to do in the situation where no.9 has retired and can't come back. But this is no good at U12 or below, where there is not a 3-4-1 scrum. Interested to see what the "powers that be" come up with on this! Tim
