However it might be worth asking this question on rugbyrefs.com

RE: Red carded substitutes

I agree didds.

It is entirely dependent on the level being played. If it was the only Front Row replacement a County Level Team had, then uncontested scrums wouldn't be an issue. If the game were at National Level or above. Then man off may well apply.

RE: Red carded substitutes

Having checked with the great and the good with whistles there is no automatic sanction for the players on the pitch.

However, dependent on the level played etc etc etc if that sub was the only front row replacement that is subsequently "needed" but of course now unavailable then "man off" rules may apply, which would at THAT moment of "need" mean somebody would have to leave the pitch.

didds

RE: Red carded substitutes

Ok........Red Cards for Subs.

As a Referee I have not yet given a Red Card to a player on the field of play. But I have given Reds to Spectators, Coaches and Subs too. My take on it, is;.........It's one of the few tools the Referee has at his disposal to let the offending Person/Coach/Player know that they should either go back into teh Clubhouse. Or make themselves scarce from the field of play and surrounding area.

In one such instance, I had a Coach say........."You're jokin, right?" When I said there would be no further play in the match, until he had gone to the Clubhouse. I then reported the incident to the County Society. Should anyone have wished to take the matter further. Or should a complaint have been made about the way in which I dealt with the situation.

In the case of Subs. If the player had already been substituted, then he would have been sent to the Clubhouse. If he was waiting to come on at some point. That player would no longer be available to the Coach as a Sub. Because he had been sent from the playing area.

Hope this helps.

Red carded substitutes

Scenario: One of your substitutes is incensed with the referee at another "wrong" decision so swears at him loudly. The referee shows him a red card. Does this mean your team has to withdraw a player because they have a had a man sent off even though he was not on the field of play at the time?
