haven't seen the game/try, but from the description it sounds like a standard rhs blind side back row move with winger... 8-9-14 (possible (dummy) switch thrown in for good measure.

Of course the 5m ELV could provide thos with even more chance to exploit.

A good example of this was the South African try off the base of the scrum 5 metres out in last Saturdays tri nations game against the All Blacks. Defence on the try line, South African scrum slightly up on tight head, eight picks up runs wide and attracts defenders and puts JP Peterson over ion the corner. More emphasis on attack with this ELV - that can only be good for the game.

Just a reminder that the ELVs will change the role of the back row, particularly at scrums. Notably, the openside flanker will be 7 metres or so ahead of the fly half.

In defence, this will create a dogleg in the defensive line. As the scrum breaks, the defending flanker is likely to have to cover wider, with the 8 (or maybe the lock) filling in nearer the scrum.

In attack, back row moves may have more relevance. This is either to target the hole between the scrum and the fly half, or to get the ball into a quick ruck, to set up a backs moves clear of their back row defence, now tied into the ruck.

This is a positional profile of an Openside Flanker compiled for Level 3 coaching course:

Technical

· Contribute to the scrum drive by pushing/ watch the ball as it moves through the scrum

· Act as a jumper or a supporter in the lineout

· Pressurise opposition half backs

Contributes strongly and aware of ball position

Effective middle of the line jumper – catches ball in both hands and distributes neatly

This is a strength of his game - always in their face

Tactical

· Maintain continuity

· Prove to be the first line of defence from scrum and lineout

· High tackle count

Basically what do u like to see your players doing

always at the breakdown competeing for the ball .if not cometed to break down putting presure on #10 or 1st recivers

always putting body on line

always wanting to win
