From the USA Rugby website - which is excellent - Lineout drills including some photo examples of drills for lineout jumpers and lifters + plyometric drills. Just replace the medicine ball with the weighted rugby ball.

Hope this helps

All the best

RE: weighted rugby ball drills?

Hi bluedog.

We use these extensively in our sessions with all - particularly catch and pass. Don't just limit it to weighted rugby balls. You can use any ball in particular tennis balls. You can generally get these in a few sizes. This aids technique. Take a leaf from the basketball training sessions - they practice their plays without a ball. This is also a cool thing to do and the players love it. Especially the forwards when doing lineout practice.

With the weighted balls ensure the core is activated - suck the belly button through to the spine - as they perform the task.

With the hookers, get them on their knees about 5m apart then progress back 6, 7, 8, 10. When doing with the jumpers have them on their knees as well. Check out NZRFU Coaching toolbox link below to the video showing this.

Just remember small progression and take the skill they are performing back to the bone - practice it right

Check out my facebook fan page (rugbycoach.co.nz) for more ideas from others with video footage and other stuff from the web.

weighted rugby ball drills?

I plan on using two weighted rugby balls in my sessions with university and u-19 female players and was wondering if anyone has any experience using these to any great extent.

My primary focus will be developing length in pass from my scrumhalves and hookers throwing in at lineouts. I'll likely start out with a minimum of use until to avoid developing any bad habits before they gain required strength.

Initial session for scrummies will be 10 left + 10 right x3, then go back to regular ball for same,

hooker's lineout throws will start with hookers just throwing to each other to start from a 5 to 7m range. I was also thinking of using them with my jumpers as a plyometric exercise.

anyone have any ideas?

thanks

bluedog
