If you have a two man lineout and a lock at receiver coming into the lineout, without anybody coming out of it to replace him, its illegal under the above written clarifications. It perhaps illustrates again the inconsistency from Union to Union, and within Unions, as to what is allowed/not allowed.

When you say 2 man Theo- do you mean a prop, a 'jumper' a receiver/ halfback & the hooker? Just tryuing to get a picture of what you mean...

I have a small team playing in the first league of schools in South Africa, i use a two man lineout with a lock standing 2 m away, when the hooker is ready he moves in and secures the ball, nobody has to fall out!, he moves in and the ball is thrown, i have never been blown up for it since the new rules came into effect.

I think you'll find the ammendments of 2009 (Global ELVs which have been written into Law) is what SHOULD be being applied (it didnt seem to be in the B & I Lions series in SA which adds to the confusion) again, different standards or interpretations between pro, semi & amateaur levels...

Also from the same IRB Law Amendments 2009 Doc is:

19.8 (k) 119 Lineout players changing places
Ruling 9 2002, 1 2003, 4 2004. 7 2004

'This confirms that players participating in the
lineout [u][b]can change places before the ball is
thrown and includes the receiver[/b][/u] and the
opponent of the player throwing in which was
confirmed in Ruling 7 2004'

So it would appear to contradict or over rule the points made in the last posting?

I am awaiting my Unions interpretation of it but I reckon they are allowed to change places before the ball is thrown in...

Well, this is what the Law says... Law Topic Source Explanation 19.8 (i) 119 Receiver position Global ELV

If a team has a receiver that player must stand at least 2 metres from players of his/her own side in the lineout and must not go closer until the lineout begins which is when the ball is thrown. It will be very difficult for either receiver

to run into a gap. The receiver can change places with somebody in the lineout (Law 18 [k]) providing that the player in the receiver position is 2 metres away when the ball is thrown in. The position of the receiver is shown in a diagram on page 120 of the Law Book.

... what the ref in YOUR game says is the thing that counts tho'- ask him/ her pre-match & hold them to it!

Receiver coming into the lineout

Can anybody clarify if the receiver can come into the lineout under the new interpretations. I understand he may well do, so long as he is replaced by someone standing in the lineout proper and is also 2m away before the ball is thrown in. If this is so, why am I not seeing it in the current international games being played under the new rules - it's a no brainer surely?
