Start the fly half wider. He has to “wait” for the pass and therefore turn inwards naturally. When he starts his run, it will be straight to begin with.

2. Put the centres wider. The fly half won’t run into their space. Fly halves should drift a little anyway. It means that he read the defence and see where the centres are, it creates gaps on the inside, it takes them away from the cover defence.

3. Make the fly half stand with his outside foot forward and hands towards the scrum half. Don’t allow him to take more than four steps before he receives the ball.

4. Practise with the fly half in the centre position so he gets an idea of how it feels to have the space taken up.

5. Give the fly half three distinct options: Pass after three steps, kick, or run for a gap.
