Presumably you confer and come up with a set of laws that are safe for all, for the one off occassion?

This weekend our club hosted a German youth section - U12s and u14s. The way rugby is set up in Germany actually permits a wider age grouping than in England (cf. girls RFUW rugby age groups). Is it a problem? No - because once the insurance angle was confirmed OK with the RFU after that we just made sure nobody was acting in a way outside of their training and experience.

The plusses far outweigh ANT minuses for a one off occassion.

didds
RE: PULLING DOWN THE MAUL
DanC (15/10/2008)
Hi Dobbin
You are right for the RFU, but not for the other unions in the UK.

Dan
Another example of how administrators are killing our game!.. how does one take a school/ jnr club touring team from the SH on tour to the NH or closer to home from England to Wales & compete on a level playing field before the laws when the Unions cant even get their collective acts together? :w00t:

RE: PULLING DOWN THE MAUL

You are quite right DanC, of course. I did make an (incorrect) assumption there. I realised after posting and tried to edit it to expand, but was not allowed to by the system.

RE: PULLING DOWN THE MAUL

Hi Dobbin

You are right for the RFU, but not for the other unions in the UK.

Dan

RE: PULLING DOWN THE MAUL

Pulling down a maul is not allowed at U19 and below, so quite simply, there is no need to coach it.

Check here for the reference, see point no. 3:

http://www.rfu.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/RFUHome.Articles_Detail/StoryID/20424

RE: PULLING DOWN THE MAUL

Apart from the RFU, any union can allow pulling down of the maul in contact games.

It is less dangerous that accidental collasped mauls and there is no medical evidence to suggest otherwise (see other threads)

It is not worth coaching until you have proper catch and drive at the lineout. At U9/U10 mauls are just poor body angles from upright players and the players rarely turn. Better to coach to form a proper maul than coach to pull it down.

U11/U12 mauls might form from lineouts, but again it is not a good tactic to coach collapsing the maul because there are so many other areas to look after.

In short, don't need to coach it and if it happens, then make sure the players have not taken away the legs.

PULLING DOWN THE MAUL

AS I UNDERSTAND IT, 'PULLING DOWN' AN ADVANCING MAUL IS NOW ALLOWED AT MINI LEVEL ALSO. IF THIS IS CORRECT, DOES ANYONE ACTUALLY COACH THIS TO THEIR MINI TEAM.

IF YES, THEN HOW?

I DO NOT, AS I BELIEVE IT IS DANGEROUS. I ALWAYS EMPLOY A TOTAL SAFETY 1ST POLICY FOR MY U9 AND U11 TEAM. IF THERE IS A SAFE WAY, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW.

COMMENTS PLEASE.

PAULA
