Prehaps the sort of driving maul favoured by the Tigers, but a rapidly rolling or spinning maul will, IMHO, remain a potent weapon in attack.

It also strike me that pulling a maul down may not be the best way to defend the maul, even under the ELV's. The attacking team will more than likely keep the ball if you pull it down. Turning the ball carrier quickly and ripping the ball seems to me (at least) a better bet.

RE: ELV`s The Maul

I'm going to try and use what in Japan we refer to as a "snake" maul. The rear players form a vertical line, and the ball is moved ever further backwards until it reaches the back player. When/if the maul is held up, the ball carrier informs the players immediately in front which way he is going, then rolls away to co-ordinate the next maul. They have time and space to set it up, because the defence is at least 4 players' body distance away.

RE: ELV`s The Maul

In my humble opinion only - Yes, this is a point of contention but in terms of stopping the maul, finding the Keystone player is crucial but then again the aspect of truck and trailer is also possible if the last player holding the ball at the back of a maul is found to be breaking off and then rejoining the back then he is the trailer that is joining the truck because it would be like running a US football wall blocking the attackers form getting to the ball..obstruction. I have found a few strikes of finding the keystone player generally does it or then the next best option is to gather force and push back so that it becomes static and then the use it or loose it law is live..depends on the size of your players though..as I dont have many fwds in my team so I have to improvise with line players in a fwd role :w00t:

ELV`s The Maul

Please comment as to the laws following an unsuccessful attempt to pull down the maul

When no defenders are in contact and the player carrying the ball, along with one or more of his teammates continue; If the ball carrier's teammates are in front of the ball carrier, and prevent defending players from making a tackle when

1. The players on their feet coming into contact with defenders who by their own actions find themselves on the ground directly in front of the attacking maul. For play in a maul to continue the ball-carrying team must continue to move forward. Moving sideways or backwards is not forward.

2. If the defence pulls down a player who is not a “keystone” player, then the maul can continue. UNSUCCESSFUL END TO A MAUL occurs “If all defenders peel off, the maul is not over and can advance up the field at will.” Any players who try and run around it will be offside.”

3. Players still need to be able to roll off the maul without causing an obstruction as “truck and trailer”, is something which remains illegal.
