Rugby coaching session for passing and evasion techniques
Try this "End ball" game to improve your player's passing and evasion techniques.
What the session is about
- Improving passing in a game situation, while coping with opponents.
- Improving the evasion skills of swerving and sidestepping.
What you tell your players to do
- Pass the ball in any direction using any method.
- Find space and try to take the pass on the move.
What to call out
- “Run into a space to pass and receive the ball”
- “Make an early decision where to go and stick to it”
- “Shout or signal with hands”
- “Change direction sharply using small steps to avoid an opponent”
What to look for
- Players that catch the ball standing still and don’t move. The solution: first, ask and encourage them to move into space once they have caught the ball. Use the phrase “catch-move” to remind them.
- Next, get the players to receive the ball on the move. Use “move-space-catch” as a reminder for them.
What to think about
- What type of passes are your team using? What are more successful? What type of movements do you find help the players find space?
- What signals are the team using and how are they helpful?
- What cues should the players look for when deciding to try to intercept a pass?
