Use this rugby drill to improve confidence in the tackle
Help your players to gain more confidence in the rugby tackle by getting them to make better selections of which tackle to use. Here is a simple rugby drill to use with four players in a small area.
Tackle selection drill
- In a seven-metre square, organise your rugby players into groups of three attackers and one tackler. The attackers spread out in front of the defender as in the picture below.
- You call a number and that attacker has to get to the far try line.
- The tackler is forced to make a front or side-on tackle.
- Change the starting distances to adjust for different levels of tackler.
- With you and other team mates watching there is a lot of peer pressure on the tackler.

Develop this drill by narrowing the area, making it harder for the attackers, or adding a second defender behind the first, who follows up on the tackle making the double hit or challenging for the ball.
