Rugby coaching play for your 15

Try this backs move play for your number 15.

Best from

The opposition 22m line, where they are likely to run a man-to-man defence.

Why it works

  • The first “dummy” between 10 and 12 holds the inside defence and allows 10 to run sideways so he has a good sight of 15.
  • Because 13 is drifting out, a gap is left for 15 to run inside.
  • The angle of 10’s run allows a better pass to 15.

Good if you have

  • A 10 who can manipulate the ball to fool the attack.
  • A strong running 15 who is good at timing his run.
  • Already run a successful “switch” between 10 and 12.
  • Already had 13 take a “crash ball” and so interest his defender.

What players should do

  • 9 passes to 10 who runs sideways almost immediately. 12 angles in, 13 angles out. 15 starts to move in behind 13.
  • 10 “dummy passes” to 12 and looks to pass wide to 13 who is running away from 10. 15 accelerates towards the space inside 13.
  • 10 steps into the defender in front of him and passes short to 15.

Common mistakes

  • 12 lacks conviction so does not interest the defence with his run.
  • 13 neither runs wide enough nor pulls his defender with him.
  • 13 runs too early and so does not “hide” 15.
  • 15 arrives too early.

Think about

  • 10 looking to “dummy” then going himself.
  • 10 missing out 15 to pass to 13.
  • 15 “switching” with 10, particularly if 10 is very fast.
