Backs move to get the ball into wide spaces

This backs move is best from between your own 10m line and the opposition 22m line. It is not a rugby "gain line" move. It is a chance to get the ball into wide spaces and use the pace of 15 and/or 11.

Why it works

  • Excellent against a "rush/blitz defence", the turn and "dummy loop" by 12 holds the defensive line from coming forward any faster.
  • 11 has more time to find a gap in the weak defensive seam between the opposition 13 and "openside winger".
  • The second and third passes are easy to make because the passer has full view of the receiver.

Good if you have

  • Already used a "crash ball" with 12 or 13.
  • A quick 11 who would benefit from more time to take on players.
  • An opposition 13 who is a weak defender and likely to step in to tackle around the "loop area".

What players should do

  • 10 passes the ball immediately to 13 and then runs a deep "arc" to receive a pass behind 13 before delivering the ball to 11.
  • 12 runs behind 13 on a "loop move", running very close to 13's "outside shoulder".
  • 13 takes a pass from 10, runs forwards, turning inwards, "dummies" a "loop pass" to 12 before passing to 10.
  • 11 takes a wide "arc" and receives a pass from 10 running into the gap between 12 and 14.

Common mistakes

  • 13 performs the "loop pass" too early. He should take the ball right to the defence releasing the ball just before contact.
  • 11 does not "arc", but runs sideways. 11 makes the move go forwards, so needs to start his run early.

Think about

  • 10 giving the ball "some air" when passing to 13. 10 can then get around on the loop to draw in defenders.
  • 15 starting very wide and coming in on an angle.
