Rugby coaching tips to get players back to their feet after a tackle

Completing a tackle involves competing for the ball on the ground once the tackle has been made. To do this and have a chance of winning the ball, the tackler must get back to his feet as quickly as possible. Use this rugby drill to coach the skill.

Using a surfing technique enables the player not only to get up very quickly, but to land on his feet in a very strong position.

  • The tackler aims to end up on his front (and preferably on top of the player he has tackled).
  • He pushes up with his arms, like a press-up, and at the same time quickly whips his legs underneath himself. His feet should end up just in front of his hips.
  • He stays low, with his back straight and his weight forward on the balls of his feet, as he reaches for the ball.

Remember as soon as he has got the ball off the ground, a ruck cannot form and he has the advantage. So the focus for the tackled player must be to get up and get the ball as quickly as possible before the opposition support arrives.
