Rugby coaching tips for one on one match day tackles

All players at some time are faced with a situation where they have to make a one-on-one tackle to stop a try. Here are the five key rugby coaching tips to successfully making these tackles.

1) Stay upright

Make yourself as big an obstacle as possible. Have your hands up and out from your body. Keep your head up and don't dip until just before you make the hit.

2) Move forward

Keep on the balls of your feet and move towards the ball carrier. This cuts down his space and the time he has to make a decision. It also means you are making the hit closer to his line than yours.

3) Be vocal

Shouting that it's your tackle and you have the carrier in your immediate sights tells the ball carrier that you are confident that you are going to make the tackle.

4) Focus on the target

Pick a target and don't take your eyes off it, that's what you are going to hit and nothing else matters. If he's big and you're small, your target is his waist. If you are as big as the target you might target his chest. Don't look at his eyes or upper body movements.

5) Get in front

Whatever you do make sure you get as much of your body as you can in front of the ball carrier. That way you have always done everything you can to make it as difficult as possible for him to get past you and touch down.
