Rugby coaching tips for soft hands passing technique
The soft hands technique of volleyball can be used to help develop any form of rugby passing. It is particularly beneficial to your lineout jumpers when delivering the ball off the top to the scrum half or peeling players.

Rugby coaching tips for technique
To introduce the soft hands passing technique, start by feeding the ball to the jumper with an underarm throw. He must focus on using both hands, with his fingers spread to gently cradle the ball and direct it accurately to the scrum half.
Develop the rugby drill
Use the following progressions to develop your players’ technique further:
- Make sure the catcher practises passing the ball to the left and right, to stationary and moving targets and at different distances.
- Get the receiver to jump for the ball and feed it back sympathetically.
- Have the jumper use only one hand. The technique is the same: the fingers must be spread to cushion the ball before guiding it to the receiving player.
- Add support players to lift the jumper.
- Vary the style of throw to the jumper: flat, fast and lobbed.
Regular practice will ensure your lineout jumpers become more consistent in the accuracy of their delivery. The weight of pass off the top to the scrum half (or other receiver) will soon improve.
