Seated catch rugby drill
Rugby coaches can use this lineout training as part of a rugby warm-up for all players and not just those in the lineout. The drills will help improve players' catching ability.
Pairs of jumpers sit facing each other, five metres apart. Each jumper sits upright with their legs straight out in front and feet together, thereby creating a narrow base. With one rugby ball between each pair, the players throw the ball back and forth.

The players must vary the throw, so the receiver has to adjust their hands and reach back, sideways and forwards to catch the ball. After each catch, the player snaps the ball to the chest or mimics a delivery to a scrum half off both sides.
What to call out
- "Switch on your core stomach muscles and keep them tense."
- "Watch the ball into your hands."
Develop the rugby drill
Have players sit on tackle bags with legs stretched along its length or, if they are confident, get them to kneel on the bag. This unstable base encourages good core stability while catching.

Key rugby coaching tip
Use a tennis ball instead of a rugby ball to improve hand–eye co-ordination. Get players to close their eyes and open them just before the catch.
Alternatively, get players to look away and turn back just before the catch. Both techniques encourage better reactions and adjustment to catches.
