Rugby coaching tips to get players practising passing out of the tackle

If your players can pass well out of the tackle, they can penetrate most organised defences. This article focuses on developing those rugby skills.

This move is a penetrative attacking play, where the ball carrier gets beyond his tacklers to release a support player coming through. Penetrating the gain line needs a player first to take a pass under pressure, then break the tackle, and offload to a team mate.

Passing through the tackle

The attacker must watch the ball right into his hands. This might not be easy under pressure, so start with the pads static before gradually increasing the speed at which they move forward.

Once he has caught the ball, the attacker must target the gap between the pads and accelerate into it. He has to push his hands through first, then drive hard with the legs to free the arms.

As soon as he can see the support player, he must give the pass. Remind your players that they should only pass if they can see the support player.
