Touch cone warm up drill
Use this rugby drill to warm up your players quickly, using minimal equipment.
What you tell your players to do in the rugby drill
- Split your team into groups of five with a ball, and give each player a cone.
- Ask the players to stand in space, about 3 to 5 metres apart, and put their cone on the ground.
- Nominate three of the players as attackers and two as defenders. The attackers have to try and touch the ball on any of the cones. They can pass but can only make two steps once in possession of the ball.

Three attacking players use movement and passing to try and touch a cone, while the two defenders attempt to stop them.
Rugby coaching tips for touch cone drill
The game can be as physical as you want it to be. Play in 30 second bursts, with players swapping after each burst.
Scoring
- The attackers receive a point for every cone they touch with the ball. Once they have touched one cone, they cannot return to it until they have touched another.
- The defenders get a point every time they touch the ball.
Develop the touch cone drill
There are many developments you can add to this warm-up, including changing the number of players, increasing the distance of the cones and changing defenders' “touch” rules.
