Holding the line rugby drill

The initial alignment of your defensive line determines the success of the defence. So, it is vital your players understand the importance of getting into the right positions. Use the following rugby coaching drill to help.

The defensive line needs to be straight at all times and the gaps between defenders should be uniform. Keeping the alignment straight is difficult when the line has to move forwards, backwards and from side to side.

Rugby drill to coach alignment

  • Set up a line of defenders in front of you with the defenders holding a piece of material between them.

  • Ensure all the lengths of material are the same, for instance, use tag belts or bibs.

  • The line has to mirror your movements, with the players keeping the material between them the same length.
