Skills and experiments rugby coaching drill session

Getting the balance right between allowing your rugby players to experiment with skills and impressing on them that mistakes cost games is very difficult. Using "black and white" rugby coaching drill sessions during your training practice might be the answer.

A "black" session is a rugby drill session where moves and plays are carried out as fast as possible, new skills can be tried, mistakes can be made and, more importantly, reacted to.

A "white" rugby coaching session is one where drills and exercises are carried out at a slower pace and no mistakes are allowed. The emphasis is on the quality of the players' rugby skills.

Players are given skill targets to achieve, for example, less than three dropped passes in the next two minutes.

Both of these rugby coaching sessions can be used with any exercise and they can be mixed up in a single session to get the maximum effect.

Try a simple handling rugby drill. The first two minutes are "white" followed by two, one minute "black" runs, before finishing off with another two minute "white" session.
