Using boxes and channels for your rugby drills

Boxes provide an enclosed, closely-packed arena, allowing you to work on players' rugby skills in a dynamic environment.

Using boxes for your rugby drills offers a great way to:

  • Observe players working, not least allowing you to easily assess players who are struggling.

  • Work on short-handling rugby skills.

  • Develop agility skills.

  • Develop a variety of visual skills.

  • Introduce or rework the basics of support play and ball presentation in a non-contact, but still pressured, environment.

Benefits of training in channels

Channels allow you to develop rugby skills through repetition. Players work along the channel and recover by jogging back down the outside before going again. They are a great way to:

  • Make slight changes and coaching points as you go.

  • Develop passing, support play and decision-making skills in two-on-one and similar situations.
