Rugby warm up drill to work on passing skills

The scrum half is the most important player on the pitch and he's going to be throwing passes from the first whistle to the last, so make sure he prepares for the game with a thorough, targeted rugby warm-up drill. The following rugby warm-up drill is not just good for your scrum half, though. You can also use it to get all your rugby players working on their handling and passing rugby skills.

Set up the rugby warm-up drill

  • In a ten-metre square, marked out with cones, place two balls, one at each corner of one side.

  • One player (the passer) stands over one ball. A second player (the receiver) stands at the opposite corner on the diagonal. Passing from the ground scrum half style, the ball is passed to the receiver.

  • The receiver puts the ball on the ground at the corner he is standing at. The passer then moves to next ball and the receiver moves clockwise to his next corner.

  • Repeat the rugby drill, working the players around the square first in one direction, then the other way. For variation, the passing player can use dive passes or spin passes.

Develop the rugby drill

You can develop this rugby warm-up drill by having four players, with one on each corner, including two passers and two receivers.

The rugby warm-up drill sets the tone for your whole rugby training session, and the game. Make your rugby drills more successful with The Ultimate Rugby Warm-Ups Manual.
