Rugby drill for kick and chase moves

Use these rugby coaching tips and drill to get defenders on the back foot with some well-executed kick and chase moves.

Any player can pick up these rugby skills - as long as they use the right technique and put this into the areas that cause most damage to the opposition.

Key rugby coaching tip

You will have to think about the ground conditions. Hard ground is ideal but you can kick and chase in any conditions.

Practice is also a key coaching tip. Take this rugby drill to your next training session:

Rugby kick and chase drill

Rugby drill set up

  • Set out a 30-metre square, split into nine boxes for this rugby drill.

  • Starting in the bottom left hand box, two players with a ball run forward.

  • A defender stands facing them 10 metres away. He is only allowed to block the ball. The attackers need to kick the ball over or through the middle small box and are only allowed to touch it once it reaches the other side.

  • If they complete this task, they then have to kick “up” the box, with the same rules, but the defender stands next to them.

  • Once the ball is kicked, the defender and chaser compete for the ball. If successful (a try is scored), then the attackers kick into the top left-hand box from the top right-hand box.

  • This time the defender is waiting in the box.

Develop the rugby drill

  • Have three attackers.

  • No defenders, time attackers completing the course.
