Build rugby skills by adding chasing games to training sessions

Children's chasing games are a useful tool for your rugby coaching sessions. They're fast, fun to do and will give your players a head-start on the rugby pitch.

Circle ball game

  • Split your players into two equal teams.

  • In a 20 metre square box, mark out a circle with a number of balls inside.

  • Mark out a scoring area on one side of the box.

  • One team has to run into the circle, collect a ball and get into the scoring area without being tackled.

  • No defenders are allowed into the circle.

  • They can only tackle the ball carrier using a touch or tag tackle.

  • Develop the game with full contact rugby tackling as appropriate.

Prison break game

Use the same set up as the Circle Ball game for this rugby coaching game, but without the circle.

  • Place the balls anywhere in the box.

  • Mark out a "prison" adjacent to the box.

  • Players again collect a ball and try to get into the scoring area.

  • If a ball carrier is caught, they are sent to the prison area.

  • Players are freed every time a circle ball score is made.
