Rugby drill to coach hit and spin technique

Attack rugby is about attacking the space. However, in close-quarter situations it is not always possible to find space. Instead, attacking players need to make themselves hard to tackle and ensure they can keep the ball alive. Coach the following rugby drill to teach hit and spin skills.

By spinning into contact, the ball carrier becomes difficult to tackle cleanly and can get in a good position to present the ball to his team mates.

Rugby drill to get players using hit and spin skills in tackles.

Hit and spin technique

  • The ball carrier tucks the ball under the arm furthest from the defender just before contact is made.

  • He hits contact low and hard with the opposite shoulder.

  • He pivots on his lead leg with his back to the defender.

  • As he spins out of the tackle he moves the ball back to two hands and accelerates away.
Training drill tips
  • When introducing the hit and spin technique, use ruck pads until players have become comfortable with the foot positioning in the drill.

  • You can also introduce a 360 degree spin into your warm up drills as part of a five or ten-metre run.
